In the late 1950’s L. M. Olson started bringing in Lumber and other building materials to supplement his construction and home building business at 712 East Murray Street in Rawlins, Wyoming. As materials were brought in and stored, members of the community asked if they could purchase some of the surplus materials for their own needs. As this activity grew, a manager, Jack Cairns was hired and the lumber business officially started as a division of L. M. Olson Construction, Inc.
In April of 1963 the construction business moved to a different location in Rawlins and the lumber and building materials division incorporated into its own business as Build-Rite Lumber and Supply, Inc. Jack Cairns continued as manager and also had ownership interest in the new corporation. In 1976, health concerns caused Jack Cairns to move to Nebraska, and the L. M. Olson family (including son Steve Olson) purchased all the oustanding shares of the business. In 1977 Steve Olson was named President and General Manager of the store.
In April of 1981 the business moved to the current location at 1724 East Cedar St where it now had 3 1/2 acres of ground and 10,000 feet of retail store space. As energy development in Wyoming continued to drive growth, the business purchased the Saratoga lumber yard in the mid 1980’s and has operated both locations ever since.
While continuing as President and General Manager, Steve Olson has also been heavily involved in the Mountain States Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (MSLBMDA) since 1961. He served on the MSLBMDA Board of Directors in 1987-88 and has continued to stay actively involved in the organization, traveling extensively around Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming to share information with other MSLBMDA member companies. This experience and expertise continues to benefit the customers and partners of the Build-Rite locations.
